Three years ago, Jule Dolci proudly passed the coaching baton for the Northern Burlington High School wrestling program to his former wrestler and state champion Cody Melton.
Now, Dolci has accepted the job again after Melton’s resignation following legal trouble stemming from an incident in August.
Melton turned himself in to Lawrence Township police on Aug. 16 and was charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual contact, according to a police report obtained by the Courier-Post through an OPRA request from the Lawrence Township Police Department. Other than the charges against Melton, most of the information in the arrest report, including details of the alleged assault, were redacted.
Northern Burlington athletic director Dan Uszaki said Melton sent an email to the school in August saying he was resigning. Uszaki declined to comment about Melton’s arrest.
Melton won the 285-pound state title in 2012, joining Andy Zuckerman (1977) and Wayne Stinson (2013) as the only state champions in the history of the Northern Burlington program.
